Why Professional Scrum Training?

Lightweight, simple to understand, difficult to master. Every word in the Scrum Guide counts. Just one example: ”transparency“ is not just about “visibility”, yet about “a common understanding”.

You want to have the basis, the foundation right. You want to be sure your knowledge is correct so you can build upon it. You want to learn from someone that has experienced different situations with their specific challenges.

As Professional Scrum Trainer (PST), I bring my own style, examples, tips and tricks, and professional experience to the classroom, combined with a tremendously mature set of training materials which is developed and sustained by the Scrum.org Course Stewards in collaboration with the entire PST Community.

A study of Gallup finds that organizations that have made a strategic investment in employee development report 11% greater profitability and are twice as likely to retain their employees.

Another study of Basel, Ludwig, Mc Mirrer & Van Buren finds that Companies investing more than average in employee training outperform the market by 45% and have returns that are 86% higher than those companies that spend less than average.

Professional Scrum Training for every level in your organisation

Depending where you are in your journey, a specific module might suit you better. To maximise the learning, based on my experience, I propose the following path:

—> For managers (any level in the organisation):
Professional Agile Leadership – Essentials (PAL-E): managers play a key role in any transformation. Their role does change. They will have to support their teams in news ways. You will leave this workshop with a handful of practical actions you will apply the next day. As such this workshop gives you and your teams boost.
Do not be mistaken, Essentials means what is essential; this is not a basics workshop…!

—> For any team member: Applying Professional Scrum (APS): to ensure a solid foundational knowledge is available for anyone part of, or supporting a Scrum Team. Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Team members, and managers.

—> Once the foundational knowledge is available, for each of the specific roles, a course can be taken to go into the specific accountabilities and attention points of these:
* Professional Scrum Master (PSM)
* Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO)
* Professional Scrum Developer (PSD)

PS. As collaboration is crucial in teams, for in-company training we do strongly advice to combine the Scrum Master and Product Owner in the same class: PSMPO.

—> Once Scrum Team members and leaders understand their own role, and as it is very useful to understand each other’s role and accountabilities to collaborate as one, Scrum Team members and leaders attend sessions of the other roles, or immediately take these sessions together as one team.
Especially as Scrum Masters and Product Owners also play a leadership role, the Professional Agile Leadership Essentials (PAL-E) is strongly recommended.

—> For both the Scrum Master and the Scrum Product Owner, there is an advanced course available: Professional Scrum Master II (PSM II), and Professional Scrum Product Owner Advanced (PSPO A). For both courses, it is strongly advised to have one year of hands-on experience.

—> In parallel, after the foundational knowledge and you understand your particular role, specific courses can be organised to
* See how Scrum can be Scaled to multiple teams working on one product – Scaling Professional Scrum (SPS)
* See how User eXperience skills can be integrated as part of the Scrum Team – Professional Scrum with User eXperience (PSU)
* See how Kanban can be used together with your Scrum implementation – Professional Scrum with Kanban (PSK)

My approach to Professional Scrum Training

Each course has its specific objectives. In order to reach these we use an exercise and conversation based approach.

Will I solve your challenges during a course. Some, some not. I give you insights so you can solve your currently known and still unknown challenges through inspection and adaptation.

No slides! Teamwork.

We connect with the topic, with what do you know or think you know, with what you will learn and want to learn, with the others, and with me.
We get to understand the concept, by hearing, seeing (I love to draw during training – not that I am good at it…), discussing, writing, …
We get concrete practice by applying the concept on a scenario, by reviewing the learning
We conclude, summarise, reflect.
